Club de LEcture - Parent Information
Why a home reading program?
According to the BC Ministry of Education, students should be completing at least 30 minutes of sustained reading per day. Reading is a fantastic way to increase both fluency and comprehension in both English and in French. This home reading program is designed to inspire students to discover new books and to continue reading over the course of the school year.
How will our home reading program work?
Students will record their reading progress (both pages and minutes) in their ‘Lecture/Reading’ duotang every evening. Initially, parents/guardians decide whether or not they wish to sign nightly, or, once a week. I will be signing the home reading log every Friday and will then check for your previous signature(s). At the end of every month, students will tabulate their reading minutes and reflect on their progress. Students will be asked to share reflections on their home reading progress through written and video reflections on FreshGrade. In January, a different format will be presented to keep engagement high.

Parent FAQs
- Q: What language does my child need to read in?
- A: As a class, we went over the importance of reading in both languages. It would be ideal to read around half of their minutes in French and the other half in English. Of course, some students may be more motivated to read in one language over the other. At first, students should aim to read at least 250 of their monthly minutes in French.
- Q: My child wasn’t able to complete the home reading this week. What can they do to make up for their missed reading?
- A: Students are able to make up for missed home reading by reading more on future days or by reading on weekends/holidays.
- Q: It has been really difficult for my child to reach even the minimum number of minutes, what should he/she do?
- A: Through the CDL we are hoping to encourage reading, not make it an unpleasant experience. If the minimum requirement is not reachable (yet), we will work on a personalized grid.
- Q: Are students expected to read for 30 minutes in addition to other home review they might have?
- A: It is highly encouraged, however, extracurricular and family schedules can sometimes make this difficult. The program allows for ‘catch up’ reading to happen on weekends or on other non-school days in case your child wasn’t able to complete reading during the school week.
